Course Overview

The course consists of nine mandatory units that must be completed to gain the Certificate in Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver at SCQF Level 5. The units are:

• No prior experience or qualifications required.
• Must be 18+ with a clean driving licence held for at least one year.
• Must not be registered with another training provider for the same qualification.

After completing the course, you will receive a Level 5 Vocational Qualification from the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA).

The course costs £500, Induction sessions are available on request, with extra study sessions offered if required.

If you’re a taxi or private hire driver in Glasgow, or planning to obtain your licence, it’s important to be aware of the changes introduced in 2020. Glasgow City Council requires all taxi drivers to complete a professional qualification to apply for or renew their licence.

The Introduction to the Role of the Professional Taxi and Private Hire Driver course is SQA-accredited and replaces the previous Customer Care course

Yes, completing this course is a requirement for anyone wishing to apply for a new taxi or private hire licence in Glasgow or for current drivers looking to renew their licence.

The course requires approximately 150 hours of study, delivered via distance e-learning. You can study at your own pace, but all units must be completed within three months. Extensions may be available in exceptional circumstances. After completing the units, you’ll take final assessments (both written and practical) at Professional Training Zone.

You are allowed two attempts per unit exam.

No prior qualifications or experience are required. However, you must be over 18 and have held a clean driving licence for at least one year. A good understanding of the English language is required to follow the course materials and assessments.
